Fred Young News Producing Fellowship
An introduction to the fast-paced decisions and teamwork behind producing a live newscast, with a pathway to a full-time role.
About the program
The legendary Fred Young worked for Hearst Television (HTV) for more than 40 years, producing impactful and award-winning stories. In recognition of his accomplishments, the Fred Young News Producing Fellowship is a 12-week paid program offered at select HTV stations across the country. Applications are due in April, and the fellowship begins after graduation.

Fred began his broadcasting career while attending Duquesne University, working at radio stations across western Pennsylvania before joining WTAE-TV in 1962. During his more than 46 years with Hearst, he advanced through newsroom and leadership roles, eventually serving as news director and general manager at WTAE-TV. In 1986 he became a corporate vice president of news and helped expand HTV from three stations to more than 30. His work earned multiple industry honors, including the Paul White Award from RTNDA. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
The opportunity
As a producing fellow, you’ll help identify and shape stories that reflect the values Fred championed. You’ll learn from senior leaders, contribute to real projects and receive mentoring designed to build a strong foundation for your career. After completing the paid fellowship, you’ll be offered a full-time producing role at one of our stations.
How to qualify
- Completion of your senior year of college or graduate school.
- Demonstrated interest in producing news for television, radio or digital.
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to help produce a newscast.
- Sound editorial judgment.
- Strong academic record.
- Willingness to spend 12 weeks at an assigned HTV station and relocate for your full-time role.

- A letter expressing your interest in the fellowship.
- A one-page essay on the role of a producer in contemporary television news (single-spaced).
- A current resume.
- A complete academic transcript.
- Two academic or professional recommendations.
Finalists will interview by phone and either in person or via video.
