An introduction to political reporting that helps local audiences understand policy and impact.

About the program 

The John DiStaso Political Fellowship is a one-semester paid position at WMUR-TV, Hearst Television’s (HTV) ABC affiliate in Manchester, New Hampshire. Named for respected political journalist John DiStaso, the fellowship gives students hands-on experience covering politics in a key primary state. Fellowships are offered throughout the year.

More about John DiStaso

John DiStaso was widely recognized as the most experienced political journalist in New Hampshire and was often referred to as the “dean” of the state’s political press corps. Throughout his career, he interviewed four sitting presidents and covered 11 New Hampshire primaries. John spent many years at the state’s largest newspaper, Union Leader, before joining HTV’s WMUR, where he wrote daily for WMUR.com and regularly broke stories. He also often appeared on WMUR-TV to provide analysis for political coverage. John died from complications of pancreatic cancer on April 21, 2022, at the age of 68. Through this fellowship, we honor his legacy.

The opportunity

As a political fellow, you’ll play a meaningful role on WMUR’s political team. You’ll follow in John’s footsteps by working on daily developments, helping produce coverage and contributing to projects tied to New Hampshire’s role in the national political landscape. You’ll learn from experienced journalists, contribute to real reporting efforts and build the reporting, research and storytelling skills needed to pursue a career in political journalism.

The opportunity

How to qualify

  • Working toward a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Journalism, Communications or a related field.
  • Journalism experience through internships or college media.
  • Excellent writing, research and communication skills.
  • Goal to work in the field of journalism.
  • Deadline driven.
  • Willingness to work various shifts including nights, weekends or holidays.
  • Strong academic record.
