The Creative Services department is responsible for the branding and promotional development of the station. As an intern, you will gain a general understanding of how a television Creative Services department runs. You will learn the fundamentals of writing and producing effective topical promotion for WMUR. 

Interns will learn to:

• Understand the fundamentals of writing and producing effective news topical promotion.
• Explore broadcast and digital marketing and learn the responsibilities of the Creative Services Department.

WTAE-TV, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, PA is recruiting college students for our 12-week paid internship program, which provides a hands-on professional learning experience, with an emphasis on exploring all facets of the Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 newsroom. Students will get experience in TV producing, reporting, news gathering and all-platform news writing and editing. 

The Pittsburgh’s Action News team brings live updates from all of Pittsburgh’s communities, in-depth coverage of issues that matter most to viewers, and works to take action for viewers and hold public officials accountable. 

Interns are introduced to every aspect of news operation, including but not limited to; news producing, digital content creation, assignment desk operations, news photography, news editing, and broadcast production. Interns work closely with assignment desk editors and producers with the goal of newsgathering, producing, writing, and presenting news content.

Qualifications

Ambitious, reliable, and enthusiastic college students should have some classroom experience in broadcast journalism, and preferably some knowledge of a television newsroom. As an HTV Emma Bowen Fellow, you will come to understand how a television station operates and be expected to contribute to the operation. You will be engaged in the newsroom, assisting producers, editors, assignment editors, reporters, photographers, and anchors. The EBF Fellow will also have the opportunity to accompany crews in the field and may even have the opportunity to field produce on their own.

What you’ll do and learn: 

• Exposure to executive management (i.e. virtual coffee and learns, panels, etc.)

• Newscast producing / story selection

• Explore broadcast and digital marketing and learn the responsibilities of the Creative Services Department

Job Responsibilities:

• Help report news stories, select, research, and write content for live newscasts and digital platforms
• Communicate, coordinate, and execute creative vision with the team of anchors, reporters, meteorologists, photographers, editors, and production staff

• Help producers and reporters with interviews, including establishing contacts

• Conduct news interviews in-person or through remote technology like Zoom

• Work with and guiding reporters and photographers in story production

Come join KCRA/KQCA TV, the Hearst Television station in Sacramento, as a Newsroom Intern! You will come to understand how a television station functions, the many jobs available and the roles the TV station plays in the community. As an intern, you’ll learn what it’s like to work with a collaborative team across multiple departments, how we get news on the air and on our digital platforms, and the vital role other departments play at the television station.

Newsroom interns will spend 10 to 12 weeks shadowing and gaining experience in the following departments:

Assignment Desk

• Assist team members in gathering news and information. This includes taking and placing telephone calls from reporters, sources, governments agencies and general public
• May also assist in research and other tasks

TV News Production

• Practice writing and formatting scripts for broadcast
• Time in the field shadowing reporters or anchors at a live report 

Digital News Production

The KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 Internship Program is a paid, rigorous and highly competitive hands-on experience that provides individuals with the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station.  An intern in the KMBC KCWE Creative Services department can expect to gain hands-on experience in the marketing of each television station. • Learn the decision-making process behind which entertainment brands we choose to support with topical promotion.

An internship at KMBC KCWE Creative Services will provide a great foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in marketing, media production, or broadcasting.

Your first day at the station is set aside for orientation which Must be attended.  Plan to work three days a week, eight hours each shift with varying schedules. During your internship you should always check in with your assigned advisor upon entering the building.

The KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 Internship Program is a paid, rigorous and highly competitive hands-on experience that provides individuals the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station. As a news intern, you are part of the team that is “Kansas City’s News Leader”.  For every person you see on camera, there are many more with exciting responsibilities in the KMBC 9 Newsroom.  You’ll gain experience writing, editing, producing, and reporting the news. The veteran journalists leading the way at KMBC 9 News will give interns a chance to try their hand in the following aspects of the news operation.

REPORT & PHOTOGRAPHY

• Work with reporters and photographers to develop, shoot, write and edit stories for broadcast.

• Shoot standups, write and produce stories for demo-reels.

• Receive feedback from Anchors, reporters, photographers, and managers on your work.

• Work on the fast-paced assignment desk finding breaking news and other stories.

PRODUCING

• Learn how producers create shows that are compelling, creative, and valuable to the viewer.

• Practice creating effective teases that hold the audience’s attention.

• Participate in editorial and planning meetings.

• Observe live production of newscasts from the control room.

FIRST ALERT WEATHER

• Learn the tools and techniques used to create informative forecasts.

• Possibly participate in any severe weather coverage.

• Practice forecasting using state of the art tools and chroma key.

• Help meteorologists put together broadcasts.

DIGITAL MEDIA

• Work with producers on Kansas City’s top digital and social platforms.

• Learn how digital content is created and delivered.

• Create content that could appear on KMBC.COM and other digital platforms.

You will also have the chance to participate in a KMBC “Intern newscast”. Whether you want to produce, anchor, report or forecast, the “Intern newscast” is your chance to work with other interns to create a newscast you can use to build your demo-reel.

As a KOCO Intern you will come to understand how a professional newsroom operates and be expected to contribute to that operation. The internship is paid and is hands-on.

On a daily basis, interns will be in the middle of the newsroom assisting reporters and producers. Interns will also have the opportunity to accompany crews in the field and may even have the opportunity to field produce on their own.

Interns have the opportunity to work with the news team on researching/gathering information on stories and with production.

Creative Services is responsible for all WCVB branding and promotional development for the station. As an intern, you will learn the fundamental principles of writing and producing effective promotional content for NewsCenter 5 and Chronicle. You will:

BROADCAST TECHNICAL OPERATIONS:

The Technical Operations internship resides within WGAL’s Engineering department. This internship includes actual “hands on” operation of equipment under the observation of permanent tech op staff members. The goal of this internship is to expose the student to real world daily technical operations in a television station. The training of the interns would be similar to what would be taught in a vocational/technical school.

Each intern will gain a general understanding of the following technical areas:

• Control Room/Studio Operations (Floor Direct, Audio, Directing)
• Air Operations (Master Control)
• ENG Receive
• IT

After completing time in each of the above areas, the remainder of the program will be designated for students to return to their area(s) of choice to gain additional training. The intern's scheduled days will remain the same from week to week however, hours will vary.

Available Internships

Newsroom:

Newsroom interns will spend time rotating through each of the following areas:

• Assignment desk, where they will assist in gathering news and information. This includes taking and placing telephone calls from reporters, sources and the general public. It may also include research, scheduling and organizational tasks.
• TV News production, where they will practice writing and formatting scripts for broadcast as well as spending time in a news satellite or microwave van on the scene at a live news report.
• Digital news production, where they will research and write content for WISN digital platforms including the WISN app, WISN.com and various social media platforms.

Creative Services:

• Attend news meetings and department meetings to go over daily news topics and performance goals
• Write copy for voice-overs and promotional identifications.
• Perform production assistant duties such as locating props and photographs, researching music and video copies for the Creative Services Department.
• Shadow promotion producers to gain a strong overview of editing and shooting responsibilities of the Creative Services/producer function.
• Maintain anchors/reporters bios, photos and files
• Write press releases, advisories, articles, etc.
• Assist in promoting WISN programming by drafting Tweets and Facebook posts
• Observe unlimited newscasts and editing sessions
• Participate in promo shoots in the station and on location

Sports:

• Checks sports and news wires for any breaking sports news.
• Compiles and submits complete list of chyron material to be used in the show.
• Gathers all professional and collegiate scores.
• Logs all sports events recorded by the Sports staff.
• Answering phone calls, taking messages and making calls for the producers and talent.
• May accompany reporters on location shoots.

Technical:

Shifts are normally in the daytime, evenings and on weekends.

After completing a week in each of the above areas, the final two weeks of the program will be designated for students to return to their areas of choice in order to gain additional training.

*Set days may be set for an intern's semester, but shifts will constantly change based on the department in which they work.

Weather:
***Please note: All candidates for weather internships with WISN must be enrolled in a meteorology curriculum or closely related program of study.

• Analyze weather charts and models
• Contribute to daily forecast preparation

• Assist meteorologists in gathering critical & breaking weather information and data

Hours are flexible and may require early mornings (4 a.m. - noon, later evenings 2:30 p.m. - 11 p.m.), and weekends (morning and evening shifts).

WMTW News Intern

WMTW-TV, the ABC affiliate in Portland, ME, has an opening for a summer News Intern. This 10-week paid internship provides individuals the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station. You will gain knowledge of the broadcast industry through exposure to all the positions within the News and Production departments. This internship will run from approximately mid-May until mid-August with some flexibility based on your availability.

Summer 2026 Session – application deadline 04/30/26

Job Description:

News Interns will work alongside reporters, producers, directors, studio operators, and News managers to experience nearly all aspects of television news creation. 

You will receive hands-on experience with positions in the newsroom, including:

• Assignment Desk – learn how news is gathered and assigned
• Reporting – shadow reporters on interviews and during live shots
• Photographer – shadow photographers as they film and edit news stories and coordinate live shots
• Digital Media – learn about the strategic use of WMTW’s website and social media platforms
• Producing – understand the process of creating a news broadcast from scratch and learn the basics of television news writing
• Directing – observe the technical execution of newscasts including directing live shows and audio operation
• Studio Camera Operator – learn camera shots, angles and lighting

Interns will also learn about departments outside of the newsroom, including Sales, Creative Services, and Engineering. 

Final Candidates are subject to a background check as a condition of employment with WMTW-TV.

Engineering and Production Operations:

The Engineering and Production internship resides within WMUR’s Engineering department. This internship includes actual “hands on” operation of equipment under the observation of permanent tech op staff members. The goal of this internship is to expose the student to real world daily technical operations in a television station. Interns will learn and train on different aspects of engineering and production.

Each intern will gain a general understanding of the following technical areas:

• Production (Floor Direct, Wireless Camera Operation, Prompter, Editing, Directing)
• Air Operations (Master Control)
• Engineering (installation, repair, and support of broadcast systems)
• IT

After completing time in each of the above areas, the remainder of the program will be designated for students to return to their area(s) of choice to gain additional training. The intern's scheduled days will remain the same from week to week however, hours will vary.

WMUR, the ABC affiliate in Manchester, NH, has an opening for a paid summer internship in the Sales Department.  The internship will provide hands-on professional learning experience, with an emphasis on Broadcast Television and Digital Sales. The WMUR internship is administered through in-person training and shadowing of Sales Managers, Account Executives and Support Specialists. Students must have junior or senior level status to apply. The internship runs June 1^st – August 7^th, 16 hours per week. 

Interns are introduced to all areas of the sales department, including but not limited to:

• Developing sales and marketing material
• Gather research for sales development
• Attend sales meetings and client calls
• Generate client facing reporting
• Shadow commercial production crew in the field
• Monitor market and industry data
• Participate in client facing events
• Researching target accounts

Completion of Internship:

After completing the internship, you should understand the role of the sales department in the broadcast television and digital industry. Interns will understand the advertising solutions available to local clients.

WPBF, the ABC affiliate in Palm Beach Gardens, FL is offering a Paid Internship in the News Department.

Summer 2026 Session

Interns will spend 10-12 weeks shadowing and gaining on-the-job experience.  You will be working in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.

News Producer

• You will collaborate with news managers and other producers to determine what the important stories are daily that need to be covered.

• You will learn how to write copy for broadcast, research stories for details and accuracy, and develop the ability to complete projects quickly and efficiently.

• You will learn how to manage the execution of a live newscast in a control room, working closely with production staff.

• You will learn how to create graphic elements, including lower-third supers and full screen graphics.

• You must be able to work under tight deadlines and have an eye for accuracy.

• You will communicate with reporters to learn the details of their stories to determine the placement in the newscast and how to tease compelling elements.

News Reporter

• You must be able to work under tight deadlines and have an eye for accuracy.

• You will collaborate with reporters and photographers to learn the responsibilities of covering local news.   

• You will learn how to write your own stories for both online and broadcast.

• You will learn to shoot standups and practice live shots.

• You will cover news and write stories for newscasts, under the guidance of producers & news managers.

• You will learn the technical workflow and skills needed to work as a local news reporter.

Video-Journalist

• You will learn how to gather video and interview content, and how to assemble stories for broadcast.

• You will learn how to make quick assessments regarding safety and situational concerns, while shooting video at various locations/events.

• You will collaborate with reporters with the goal of telling a visually compelling story. 

• You will learn the importance of care and maintenance of equipment.

• You will learn the technical workflow and skills needed to work as a local video journalist.

• Prior experience shooting video and/or editing on Adobe Premiere preferred.

Digital Producer

• You will collaborate with our digital news manager and other digital producers to determine what the important stories are daily that need to be covered.

• You will learn how to write copy for broadcast, research stories for details and accuracy, and develop the ability to complete projects quickly and efficiently.

• You will learn how to produce content in a content management system that supports and populates our digital platforms – web and social.

• You will communicate with reporters to learn the details of their stories, as well as make needed calls for information.

• You will learn the technical workflow and skills needed to work as a digital producer.

Technical Production

• You will observe and train on all aspects of behind-the-scenes newscast production: directing, technical directing, audio, camera operation.

• You will learn how all the roles work together to execute a live newscast from the control room.

• You will learn how to manage newscast execution software, graphics, camera shots and live in the field elements during a newscast.

• You will learn how communicate with a team during stressful situations to troubleshoot and navigate live issues to a positive outcome.
